Six Signs Your Watch Might Need a Service

A quality watch can run reliably for years, but even the finest mechanical timepiece needs attention eventually.

The good news is that your watch will often give you clues before something becomes a major problem. Here are six signs it may be time to have your watch professionally assessed or serviced.

1. It’s gaining or losing more time than usual

Mechanical watches naturally gain or lose small amounts of time, but a noticeable change from your watch’s normal performance is worth investigating.

If you’re suddenly resetting the time much more frequently, the movement may require regulation, servicing or further assessment.

2. The power reserve isn’t lasting as long

Does your automatic watch stop overnight when it previously kept running?

A noticeable reduction in power reserve can indicate that the movement or winding system isn’t operating as efficiently as it once did.

It doesn’t automatically mean a full service is required, but it’s a good reason to have the watch checked.

3. Winding or setting feels different

You get to know how your watch feels.

If the crown suddenly becomes stiff, rough or unusually loose when winding or setting the time, don’t force it.

A change in feel can indicate an issue with the crown, winding mechanism or movement that is better investigated early.

4. It stops unexpectedly

A mechanical watch that repeatedly stops despite being sufficiently wound or regularly worn needs attention.

There can be several possible causes, so avoid assuming the worst. Professional watch diagnostics can help identify what’s actually happening before deciding on the appropriate repair.

5. You can see moisture beneath the crystal

This one shouldn’t wait.

Fogging, condensation or visible moisture beneath the crystal can indicate that water has entered the watch.

Moisture can damage the movement, dial and other components, so we recommend having the watch professionally assessed as soon as possible.

6. You can’t remember its last service

If the answer to “When was this watch last serviced?” is “I have absolutely no idea”, it may be worth having it checked.

This is particularly common with vintage, inherited and pre-owned watches where the service history isn’t known.

That doesn’t automatically mean the watch needs a complete overhaul. An assessment can help determine its current condition and whether servicing is actually required.

Pay attention when your watch behaves differently

The important thing isn’t to become overly concerned about every second gained or tiny change you notice.

It’s about recognising when a watch that you know well starts behaving differently.

At JFP Watch Repairs, we provide professional watch servicing, repairs and diagnostics in Adelaide, helping identify what your watch needs before recommending the next step.
